Update on Nathan & Kaleb 10/30/2012 @ 11:00am

Nathan’s ventilator had to be put back in yesterday as he was building up too much CO2.

We were sad but knew that they may have to do this a couple times before he finally is able to get completely off it for good.  Things were mostly stable last night, and the nurses were starting to say that we both look like zombies, so they ordered us to try and get some sleep at the Ronald McDonald house.  We felt comfortable with being down the hall for a few hours for the first time in awhile, so we told the boys to be good and went to to RMH.  The first night at Ronald McDonald wasn’t too bad – not much water pressure but Susan couldn’t lay flat so she ended up sleeping in the recliner by the babies while I got a few hours in the room.  The next night, a really sweet nurse rounded us up a bunch of pillows so Susan could try to sleep in the room, so we propped her up and we got a few more hours of sleep (maybe even 4-5!)  Last night, things were stable so we decided to take the nurses orders, and were sleeping pretty well, but around 11:30pm just after finally dozing off, the nurse called to let us know they were going to have to do surgery to insert a tube in Nathan’s tummy so we came to be with them during that.  They found some gasses outside Nathan’s intestine in his belly, so they know that there are some perforations in his small intestine which is what is causing the gas pock.  Kaleb is still receiving nitric oxide and is still on the oscillating ventilator.  Both babies will be getting lab work around noon, and x-rays around 6pm today.  Right now Nathan is getting platelets to give him some blood volume which appears to be helping his blood pressure come up a bit (it was pretty low this morning.)  Mom is making plenty of milk for the babies when they’re ready for it.  She’s “udderly” amazing!

We can’t thank everyone enough for all the wishes and prayers, we really truly appreciate it!  More later…
